Kate Muir. It emerges, alas, as a compromise, hedging its bets between cheery, characterful Ocean's-ish caper and brute-force beat-'em-up; we're offered helpings of both, but not enough of either to satisfy.

Mike McCahill. Ideal Statham - see 's The Transporter - is a gent, a man of few words who cleaves to a certain way of doing things.

The hero he gives us here is just a little too close to a thug, a braggart and a loser. It won't do.

Tim Robey. It's hard to not feel a slight sense of disappointment when what looks like a steaming hot slab of fresh action filmmaking hot off the grill turns out to be microwaved leftovers.

James Rocchi. This film's tagline should be "Come for the stabbing, stay for the gabbing! Odie Henderson.

As Nick Wild, Jason Statham is perfection. Quiet, brooding, introspective but with a wild streak, no one can build tension with silence, stillness and just a stare like Statham.

Debbie Lynn Elias. It all feels like a semi-engaging flashback episode of a show about a Las Vegas "bodyguard" Stephen O'Nion. With an unsurprising climax, weak story and repetitive action, the film fails to be half as good as a regular Statham gag must mandatorily be.

Mohar Basu. Wild Card has a handful of spectacular fights choreographed by Cory Yuen , sprinkled throughout long stretches of compulsive gambling and macho brooding.

Joe Bendel. As Jason Statham action flicks go, this is one of the better ones, but it is still only going to appeal to the fans.

Theresa Smith. This is a snappily-edited film that finds a surprisingly solid middle-ground between fast action and gangster melodrama.

He [Statham] showed it to me once when we were doing Mechanic , but I was off doing something else, but then he showed it to me again after Expendables 2 and I got into it, because of the writing really.

William Goldman is a hero of mine I actually worked with him on The General's Daughter. He did plot hole work on the script.

So this was a chance to work with him on a whole script — not just a polish on a script. West said the script filmed was the one Goldman wrote over thirty years ago.

He later elaborated:. I rang him up and said, "I'm about to put the record straight and fix this film for you.

He said, "Just make sure that Nick is the toughest guy you've ever seen in your life. It was the same for me — once he told me that, "Nick's the toughest guy in Vegas", every scene informs that.

Even when he's not doing anything, everybody in the room knows that, and everybody knows his history, what he's capable of. And so he ultimately doesn't have to do that much, because he is the toughest guy in Vegas.

There's nothing in the script that's really aged, there's no pyrotechnics or technology really. Filming began in early in New Orleans , Louisiana.

So when it does explode, it's exploding for the right reason. The first one, he's getting back into his old skills — precision fighting.

The only way he's going to get out alive is by relying on his old skills. And he's a master of that. The second fight explodes out of anger, and it's really anger at himself for going back to being a gambling addict.

They're character-driven fights. Whereas traditionally in action films, they're light relief — they're almost commercial breaks in the story.

These ones come out of the situation his character's in, not just that he's in jeopardy and has to fight his way out of it — they're emotional fights.

It was a formidable thing, there are pages and pages of dialogue — it's a drama really. It's not an action film really, it's a character piece.

Jason [Statham] is the lead in every scene and he has huge dialogue scenes. I knew he was passionate about it, but was like, "Are you happy with all this dialogue stuff?

I love it. I want to do it. Especially after The Mechanic where he only has five lines in the whole film! That character has no dialogue.

But we turned up on the first day and he knew every word by heart and was amazing. So, Wild Card , I think will surprise a lot of people — it's a very strong dramatic piece by him.

There are, of course, also two or three fights! I think some of his best fights ever are in it. They're very realistic and we spent a lot of time on them, so they're very detailed and very well executed I think.

I was amazed. I think this is just the beginning for him, I think you'll see a lot more dramatic stuff from him.

But if you're looking for a movie that even in the slightest knows what it's about, I'd suggest you look elsewhere.

Gimly M Super Reviewer. Jul 05, The prolific writer William Goldman is the reason to see this typical Jason Statham thriller, all about Las Vegas and dreams deferred.

While nothing unusual happens, the insightful dialogue carries the piece. As well, Statham himself is seen perhaps to be better than his action hero cutout character designation, only lacking the proper vehicle.

Kevin M. W Super Reviewer. May 18, Generic and fairly mundane, Wild Card is an underwhelming action film. When one of his friends is beaten and raped Nick Wild, a private security specialist, tracks down the man responsible and helps his friend get her revenge.

Jason Statham leads the cast, but gives a pretty rote performance. In fact, none of the acting is particularly good. And the plot is unfocused, shifting between three seemingly unrelated storylines.

Wild Card is mildly entertaining at times, but overall it's a rather forgettable film. Dann M Super Reviewer.

Apr 10, Not a half bad action movie. Then again, at its core, this isn't really a conventional action movie.

There's only maybe 3 total action sequences in the entire movie, that are done pretty well. I wouldn't call it good, at all, but it's a surprisingly decent little movie.

The problem, however, is the fact that the movie goes all over the place with its 'narrative'. There's no real one thread connecting everything that happens together, in spite of it all actually being interconnected.

This is one part revenge movie, one part blackjack movie, and one part action movie. And all of it is about as disconnected from each other.

Three completely different movies in one. That's, honestly, what keeps the film from a higher rating.

Well that and the fact that the film just looks a little bland to me. It takes place in Las Vegas, one of the most colorful places in the United States and yet it comes across as so utterly lifeless and joyless.

Granted, that's part of the story with Nick just wanting desperately to leave Las Vegas behind to start his new life.

Maybe it's just the fact that I rented the standard DVD version and not the Blu-Ray, because why would I spend more for the Blu-Ray version since it's not like it'd make that much of a difference.

But even with that nothing about the film, visually, popped out at you. I know I spent a lot of time talking about this, but it's minor in comparison to how the film's narrative is structured without any rhyme or reason.

The site's consensus states: "Hardcore Jason Statham fans may enjoy parts of Wild Card , but all other action aficionados need not apply.

She summed up her review by saying that Wild Card "is no royal flush, no full house, no three of a kind. A bust is I think the term I'm searching for".

When a friend is beaten by a sadistic thug, Nick strikes back, only to find out the thug is the son of a powerful mob boss.

Suddenly Nick is plunged into the criminal underworld, chased by enforcers and wanted by the mob. Having raised the stakes, Nick has one last play to change his fortunes Written by Lionsgate.

Most people I've asked have a love - hate relationship with this movie. So when I've decided to finally see it, my expectations were rather low.

Yet, this proved to be an amazing movie, maybe one of his best. Yes, it doesn't have the humor of Crank and he fights far less in this one, compared to his others.

But it is a comedy with dark undertones and a moral in the story. So yes, it is a fast paced action movie that is worth watching.
